Licensed Psychologist
Pronouns: she/her they/them
Meet Dr. Lucille Waagen
I am a licensed psychologist in Rhode Island and offer individual therapy for adolescents over 12 and adults of all ages. My areas of interest include: depression, anxiety, relationships, identity development, vocational stressors and satisfaction, trauma, academic challenges, and adaptation to major life changes. I specialize in trans-affirming care, 2SLGBTQIA+ identity development, and experiences of queer identities.
My therapeutic approach is tailored to every client, depending on their unique needs. My approach utilizes Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Emotion Focused Therapy (EFT), Interpersonal Psychotherapy (IPT), and Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT). The common theme across my approaches is a feminist, multicultural lens in which clients and I explore the impact of societal messaging and engage in discussion of cultural values as they relate to a client’s experiences.
My Background
I received my Ph.D. from the University of North Dakota’s Counseling Psychology program. I completed my pre-doctoral internship at the University of Texas in Austin and engaged in post-doctoral work with the University of North Dakota as a clinical professor and supervisor for clinicians in training. Many of my clinical experiences have been university counseling centers and community mental health centers.
Prior to joining PVD Psychological Associates, I engaged in research with the queer community to explore queer relationship experiences and transgender identity development. I strongly believe research should inform clinical practice and continue to review modern literature to offer ongoing evidence based treatment.
My Approach and Philosophy
I believe everyone who seeks out therapy has the desire to change, and the capacity to grow and learn. Patience is a key component of my approach; clients deserve the time and space needed to gain insight into their experiences and explore how to heal. I seek to offer a safe, nonjudgmental, and empathic space to allow for vulnerability.
In addition, due to all humans having unique experiences, I believe therapeutic services should be tailored to the uniqueness of every person. I seek to integrate culture and identity into our work as to validate unique experiences and further design a culturally sensitive experience.
Making an appointment is a massive first step, and I believe that is worth celebrating. I look forward to hearing from you!
