Meet Gregory Katzen, PsyD
I am a licensed clinical psychologist based in Rhode Island, offering both in-person and online therapy to adults and couples residing within the state. I specialize in helping individuals navigate issues such as shame, self-criticism, depression, anxiety, trauma, stress, and unhealthy habits. I also work with couples on enhancing communication, improving dynamics, and addressing marital conflict. I have training in evidence-based practices, including Compassion Focused Therapy (CFT), Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), Integrative Behavioral Couples Therapy (IBCT), Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), and Cognitive Processing Therapy (CPT).
My approach centers on creating a space that feels steady, supportive, and grounded—where you can show up just as you are and begin to explore the experiences, thoughts, or emotions that have felt hard to navigate. I offer a compassionate presence so you don’t have to carry it all alone. Together, we’ll build insight, develop practical tools, and work through the challenges that may be keeping you stuck. With time and support, you will strengthen your resilience, reconnect with what matters most, and take steps toward a life that feels more authentic, balanced, and fulfilling.
When working with couples, I use Integrative Behavioral Couples Therapy (IBCT), which helps partners better understand and navigate their differences with more empathy and less reactivity. It’s about deepening connection, improving communication, and creating a more loving, authentic partnership.
My Background
I earned my doctorate in psychology from the PGSP–Stanford PsyD Consortium, where I received training grounded in empirically-supported treatments and compassion-focused care. I completed my pre-doctoral internship at Marin County Behavioral Health and Recovery Services, gaining experience in community-based care and working with individuals navigating a wide range of mental health challenges.
Following my internship, I served as the director of a community mental health nonprofit in Northern California, supporting underserved populations and deepening my commitment to accessible, client-centered care.
I went on to complete my post-doctoral training at the Bedford VA Medical Center, where I focused on trauma-informed care and received additional specialized training in couples therapy. Following my postdoctoral year, I continued at the VA as a staff psychologist, further expanding my work with trauma and relational dynamics. These roles helped shape my clinical perspective and continue to guide my work with individuals and couples at PVD Psychological Associates.
My Approach & Philosophy
Compassion is at the heart of everything I do. I believe real change begins when we can meet ourselves—and our struggles—with gentleness and understanding. So much healing becomes possible when we turn down the volume on self-criticism and instead create space for kindness, curiosity, and growth.
Therapy, to me, is a shared journey. You bring your openness, willingness, and lived experience; I bring my clinical skills, presence, and a warm, grounded space where all parts of you are welcome. Together, we co-create a space that feels safe, steady, and supportive—where you don’t have to go it alone.
Once that foundation of compassion and trust is in place, I draw from a blend of evidence-based approaches to support meaningful, lasting change. I also integrate trauma-processing techniques to gently support healing from past wounds and to help build resilience moving forward.
My hope is that our work helps you feel more connected to yourself and your values, more flexible in how you respond to life’s challenges, and more empowered to move forward with clarity and intention.
